Snow Monkey Photography
Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park : 地獄谷野猿公苑

Photograph the World-Famous Snow-Monkeys with these Tips.

나가노현 북부

소개문

Of all the monkeys in the world, the species that has the most northern habitat is the Japanese macaque. Living in snow 4-5 months of the year has earned them the nickname "Snow Monkeys". Jigokudani Wild Monkey is dedicated to researching the troupe that inhabits the Yokoyu River valley just upstream from the Shibu-Yudanaka onsen resort town and at the base of the Shiga Kogen highlands. With its steaming onsen activity, the valley is called Jigokudani, literally "Hell Valley". This is the only place in the world you can see wild monkeys bathing in a hot spring mineral water bath. Visitors can walk amidst the monkeys in their natural environment, enjoying seeing the baby monkeys frolick as well get a close-up picture of the blissful look on the faces of the monkeys as they soak in their onsen.

Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park is not a zoo. Visitors get to enter the natural habitat of the Japanese macaques and observe social behavior up close. The staff feed the monkeys enough so that they don't wander off and never come back, but not so much that the monkeys depend on humans for food. With that fine balance, the monkeys come down to the park practically every day but they pretty much ignore the humans.
The park leader, Ogiwara-san, is an award-winning photogapher. He and the other staff are very knowledgeable about the monkeys and are happy to answer questions. Their English is limited to having an interpreter would help.
The park's facilities are fairly basic, but were nicely remodeled in December, 2016.
